Its origin is in the fishing village of La Tiñosa. With development for tourism, the village changed its name to Puerto del Carmen. The expansion of the village runs parallel to the beaches, with a style of low-level building which was the philosophy of César Manrique. This is now the most important tourist area on the island of Lanzarote, and one of the most important anywhere in the Canaries.
